Lady Dogs take first at Archie Roe meet
The Lady Bulldogs track team wrote a
new page in Whitefish sports history on Saturday when they won the
Archie Roe track meet at Legends Stadium in Kalispell. Whitefish
track coach Derek Schulz can’t remember a time in his career when a
girls Class A team won the Archie Roe.
“It’s one of the most prestigious track
meets in the state,” Schulz said. “The girls were really focused on
the team effort. You’ve got to like a meet like that — it’s big
time.”
Freshman Marlow Schulz led the effort
with wins in the 100 (12.9), 200 (26.23) and 400 (57.70) sprints.
She also anchored the relay team.
Amanda Foley was right there with her,
taking second place in both the 100 and 200, and fourth in the
400.
“I’m super proud of Marlow and Amanda,”
Schulz said.
Distance runners Jessica Sagen and
Carly Schwickert put some points on the board for the team, too.
Sagen was first in the 1,600 and second in the 3,200. Schwickert
earned second in the 1,600 and sixth in the 3,200.
Schulz commended each of the team
members that placed, including Abby Strellnauer in discus and
Heather Bailey in triple jump.
“All the girls lay everything out there
for the team,” Schulz said. “We were there to show exactly what
Whitefish track is all about.”
The boys team was successful as well,
Schulz noted, finishing in fifth place overall.
Drew Galbraith put together a strong
showing, winning the high jump at 6-1, and taking third in the 110
hurdles.
“Drew is coming into his own,” Schulz
said. “His technique and mental focus is improving by the minute.
He will finish the year strong for us.”
Logan Harwood grabbed third in the 400
and Iaian Cameron took sixth in the 300 hurdles. Whitefish’s
1,600-relay was second with a 3:35.33.
“We’ve got some young talent on the
boys team,” Schulz noted. “We’ll take them to divisional and state,
and lay it all on the line.”
The coach likes where the teams stand
at the beginning of May — the month that matters most.
“May matters is what we say,” Schulz
said. “We are peaking at the right time. Everything is important
from here on out.”
The team travels to Polson this weekend
for the final regular season meet.
“We will approach Polson seriously, but
use it as a prep meet,” Schulz said. “We want to get in good and
solid workouts, and iron out relays. At this point, you throw out
the times because it’s places that matter — being competitive
against whatever field you’re up against.”
