Local shelter thanks Missoula

As a volunteer for the Flathead County Animal Shelter, I have been a witness to the ever growing population of stray and owner-surrendered dogs at the shelter. In the past few weeks, the shelter's population has grown to approximately 80 dogs. It is truly heart-breaking to see so many former loving and faithful companions awaiting their new homes as more continue to arrive at the shelter.

As a result of a recent KAJ/KPAX news story, the Missoula Humane Society extended their generous help and support by taking nine of the shelter's senior dogs to their facility for adoption. Our community is extemely fortunate to have the support of local/regional media, the Missoula Humane Society, the Flathead Spay and Neuter Task Force and the Humane Society of Northwest Montana in helping the shelter's companion animals find forever homes.

As a reminder, please make sure all pets are collared with ID and tags (and also microchipped) to help recover lost pets, especially during thunderstorm season. Considerable efforts should be made in contacting family members and friends, placing ads in local newspapers and posting flyers in an attempt to re-home one's pets prior to surrendering them to an animal shelter.
