Bulldogs show true grit on the mat
The scoreboard may have showed a giant
goose egg, but for this year’s young Bulldog wrestling team,
Friday’s dual with Columbia Falls was easily their most impressive
of the season.
Each weight class put up a good fight
against a tough Wildcat team as Whitefish showed the kind of grit
coach Ryan Boyle wants to see as the divisional tourney
approaches.
“Up and down the line up, they fought
the hardest,” Boyle said. “There was heart there, and they were
going hard.”
Bulldog freshman Kaleb Mohn started the
evening by taking Jordan Harland to the brink. Mohn used all of his
98-pound frame to stay alive and fight off Harland’s take-down
attempts.
Sophomore Wyatt Price went three rounds
at 125 pounds against the Cats’ Dalton Nelson, while senior
exchange student Marcelo Theodoro fended off the Cats’ Josh Folsom
for the better part of five minutes.
“They’re all coming together,” Boyle
said. “I’ve seen more team unity in the last couple weeks, and I
like seeing that. There are 18 guys fighting for each other.”
In a dual with Eureka later in the
evening, Whitefish put up 23 points, including a 15-0 technical
fall by Kyle Tracy and a pin by Madison McWhirter.
Whitefish hosts the divisional
tournament this Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Whitefish High School
gym.
