Feds pass budget, get your bike, Glacier is open!

In the 11th hour Friday night, Congress passed a federal spending bill. That means Glacier National Park will remain open.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road is plowed to beyond Avalanche Creek campground. There are several icy patches from Lake McDonald Lodge to Avalanche Creek, but they are not very long and for the most part, the road is free and clear of ice.

Beyond Avalanche Creek, the road is all ice, and not suitable for bicycle travel. In fact, there's a large avalanche chute just beyond Avalanche campground that could be dangerous.

Last night, cyclists could hear avalanches coming off the slopes, so hikers and bikers beyond Avalanche should use extreme caution.

Snow depths in the wooded areas are still quite deep - from a foot to four feet deep - even at lower elevations.

One lane of the Camas Road is also plowed and plows on the east side were working this week on the Many Glacier Road and the Two Medicine Road. The Chief Mountain Road is plowed, but gated.
