School garden
The Whitefish Middle School and the Whitefish Lions Club would like to extend a thank you to all who participated and assisted in our Potato Harvest Service Project. On Wednesday Oct. 6, the seventh- and eighth-grade students and educators of Whitefish Middle School worked with the local Whitefish Lions Club to harvest the Farm-to-School garden.
The garden yielded an estimated 1,000 pounds of potatoes. The potatoes were distributed between the school and the community. The school took what it could and sold the others in order to help supply other fresh produce throughout the year.
The garden was started by the Whitefish Lions Club in hopes of providing fresh, locally grown, organic produce to our local schools. The idea behind the garden was to promote a healthy lifestyle for our Whitefish youth in hopes of helping the fight against obesity and diabetes — one of the causes of eyesight and hearing problems.
The garden yielded approximately 800 pounds of cucumbers, squash, zucchini, onions and radishes as well as the large quantity of potatoes. The project was a lot of hard work and a huge success. There was a multitude of support from many local businesses and community members. Without their support, none of this would be possible.
A special thank you to Don K Cheverolet/Subaru, CarQuest, Rocky Mountain Transportation, Valley Properties, Morris Services Inc., Grass Roots, Landcastle, Plant Land, Auto Rain, DePratu Ford/Volkswagon, Glacier Bank of Whitefish, Mild Fence Co., Whitefish Credit Union, T Bend Construction, Purple Frog, Midway Rental, Western Building Center, Hedstrom Dairy, American Bank and Cenex Supply.
