Children at Kidz-in-Motion Child Care and Activity Center in Lakeside put their feet to their pedals last week to raise money for their peers at St. Jude Children's Hospital.

About 20 youth raced laps around a set-up track May 12 in the parking lot of Kidz-in-Motion across from Lakeside Elementary School. They rode bikes, tricycles and scooters.

The day care and pre-school, which has been around since June 1997, has done this annual fundraiser for the past 10 years.

"We've done it with physical education in mind for the children and with the children (at St. Jude) in mind who are unable to ride bikes," owner and director Cathy Nash said. "It's our way of teaching the children they can help other kids."

For the two weeks prior to the event, the children complete coloring book lessons from St. Jude and learn about bike safety so they are prepared.

To raise money, the kids sought pledges and donations for their laps.

Kaidrian Buls* completed the most laps with 275. He was followed by Chandler Buckles and Chandler Noland, each with 200 laps.

Funds are still being collected through May 28, but thus far the event has raised more than $400. In years past, the event has raised as much as $1,200.
