Biking season kicks off on all terrain

The bicycling season is well underway and there seems to be no lack of trails, rides or events, so let's get the show on the road.

For starters, Flathead Fat Tires is hosting the premiere of "Follow Me," a mountain bike film by the fine cinematographers responsible for such films as "Seasons," "Roam" and "The Collective." The show will take place at Grouse Mountain Lodge on Thursday, May 20, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door, and refreshments will be served.

The Trail Runs Through It trail sculptors have punched the trail through to the Lion Mountain Loop Road (or Mountainside Drive) trailhead and it is now possible to ride singletrack from the trailhead to Beaver Lake Road.

The Spencer Lake trails and Pig Farm trails are also riding well. Keep in mind that a state land use permit is required for recreation on these trails.

The report from the higher trails, such as Reid Divide in the Tally Lake area, is that the snow is gone but there's more than a little blowdown. You'd be well advised to give it a week or two.

On the tarmac side of things, Fish Trails brings you Bikefish, a weeklong celebration of all things bicycle, happening June 8-13. Expect such festivities as group rides, bike polo and a kid's bike rodeo, all capped off by the Great Northern Stage Race happening June 12-13.
