Golf team disqualified at state

The Bigfork High School golf team was disqualified from the Class B State Tournament on Tuesday afternoon due to a violation in a Montana High School Association rule.

While en route to the tournament Sunday in Huntley Project, which started with a Monday morning practice round, the Bigfork team stopped along the way in Anaconda to play a round of golf.

That is where they got into trouble. MHSA rules state that teams are not allowed to meet or practice on Sundays.

With the tournament beginning on Monday, most teams had no choice but to meet and travel together on Sunday.

The Bigfork team was disqualified following the first round of competition Tuesday and headed home Wednesday morning.

"I'm disappointed," said Matt Porrovecchio, BHS activities director. "I felt there were other avenues that could've been explored."

Porrovecchio said he is writing a letter to the MHSA regarding the issue, but acknowledges that it will be too late for them to reverse their decision even if they choose to.

The Class B State Golf Tournament concludes Wednesday.
