Glacier Nordic sweeps at Essex

Whitefish High School seniors Stella

Holt and Jack Steele anchored the Glacier Nordic Ski Club at the

Kick Out the Kinks Nordic race in Essex last weekend, each claiming

first place in the 10K race.

Holt out-gunned Glacier Nordic coach

Robin Brooks by one minute, while Steele edged former Glacier

Nordic racer Zach Heskeit at the line by six seconds. Heskeit

currently races for Montana State University.

The team did really well for their

first race of the season,” Brooks said. “It was fun to have a mass

start because a lot of the kids got to work with each other

throughout the race and use each other to push themselves. I’m

really happy with how they did.”

Brooks noted the third-place

performance of freshman Connor Gray.

“He stepped up to do the 10K, which not

many racers his age do,” she said. “He decided to go for it, and he

had an amazing race.”

The team has a few more warm-up races

before their first Junior National qualifier in Jackson, Wyo.

They’ll be at the Blacktail Bash and the Ozone Pursuit in Seeley

Lake early next month. Holt and Steele will travel to the elite

Senior Nationals in Rumford, Maine, from Jan. 2-8.
