The Columbia Falls boys have found a nice groove. Last Saturday they won the Libby Invitational besting Polson who came in second 139-99.

Justin Whitman was first in the 800, Derrick Williams was first in the 1600, Taylor Martinson won the long jump and Nate Thompson won the triple jump.

Martinson's leap of 20 feet 6.5 inches is tops in the state in Class A, said coach Jamie Heinz.

Williams's time in the 1600 put him in the top three in state for Class A as well, Heinz noted.

The team then topped it off with a 1600 relay win with runners Whitman, Patric Jessat, Kaleb Johnson, and Williams.

And the Cats were down two men — Shawn Whitman and Dean Phillips didn't compete in Libby.

"We still haven't had a meet where everyone was in yet," Heinz noted. "But we had a dominating day."

"We're not close to peaking yet."

The girls also had an improved performance taking third. The girls had no first finishes, but saw a good performance from Cedar Jordt, who was second in the 800 and Jinise Osborne, who came in third in the 1600.

"We're seeing some great individual efforts from our girls," Heinz said. "Hopefully we can come together at the end of the season."

The team travels to Whitefish for a meet on Saturday.
