The Columbia Falls girls softball team lost its season opener to Whitefish 6-3 last Saturday. The Kats suffered from an anemic offense in their first loss to the Bulldogs in at least four years.

"We didn't hit the ball," said head coach Dave Kehr. "And they hit it when they had to. That was basically it."

The Kats got singles from Niki Birky and Michonne Cronquist. The rest of the team was blanked.

Even so, the girls had a shot to tie it in the top of the seventh.

Columbia Falls had two on and two out when Renee Nelson hit the ball sharply but was called out on the throw to first to end the game.

Kehr said the Kats simply need to make contact.

"We've got to put the ball in play and make (opponents' play some defense," Kehr said.

The girls travel to Eureka today (Thursday) and then face Polson at home Friday. Varsity start is 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Kats host Havre in a doubleheader with a varsity start scheduled for 11 a.m. and again at 2 p.m.

Last week's Browning game was postponed to May 4 because of the weather. The teams will play a doubleheader here starting at 3:30 p.m.
