Improvement for boys team, even in two losses

The Columbia Falls boys soccer team dropped a pair of games last weekend, but even in the losses, they saw some improvement.

The Cats, which are largely inexperienced, lost to Park High School Friday 6-0, but tightened down their defense Saturday, losing to Belgrade 1-0.

"That was a good effort against Belgrade," said coach Peter Browne.

He noted the team played much better defensively, but the Cats still need to find some answers on offense. They have yet to score a goal this season.

Belgrade outshot the Cats 15-3, and Park outshot the boys 19-5.

Goalie Jake Calderwood improved his play — he left against Park with an injury, but came back against Belgrade to turn away 14 shots.

"Jake's a good athlete," Browne noted.

The Cats will have their hands full this week against Libby. Browne expects a tough match. The team will add a few more players who have recently joined the squad and will also see Phillip Gales — a transfer from Tacoma, Wash.

Gales has soccer experience. The soccer team this year has a host of players — but only a few have much soccer playing experience.
