The Whitefish Chamber of Commerce’s pre-Halloween Gone Fishin’ social will take place at the Great Northern Brewing Co., on Central Avenue, on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 5-7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and will include brewery tours, complimentary snacks, beverages and a chance to win door prizes.

The Alpha Iota Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Flathead Valley Community College will host a mini “Relay for Life” on the FVCC campus on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones whose lives the disease claimed and fight back to help put an end to the disease. Teams of five or more are invited to participate for a $10 per person donation benefiting the American Cancer Society. Deadline to register is Oct. 28. Flathead Valley Community College will host a talk on “Going to Extremes: Altitude Medicine” by wilderness medicine trainer and explorer Sue Purvis in the Board Room inside Blake Hall at noon on Thursday, Oct. 29. Purvis founded the Khumbu Medical School, offering the first-ever high-altitude medicine course to the Sherpa people who guide clients to Mount Everest. The Whitefish Moose Lodge will hold a free “Over 60” party on Friday, Oct. 30. Sponsored by the Women Of The Moose Chapter 597, the event will begin at 12:30 p.m. with entertainment by The Calamity Singers. There will also be bingo and food and door prizes. For more information, call 862-4809.

Master puppeteers from Dragon Art Studio will perform at the O’Shaughnessy on Friday, Oct. 30. at 7:30 p.m. Seldom seen here in America, Chinese rod puppetry is an ancient art form that provides a unique cultural experience for the whole family. The performance blends Chinese puppetry with music, elegance, humor and special effects. Puppeteers Yuqin Wang and Zhengli Xu of Dragon Art Studio have performed for more than 40 years. They are National Heritage Fellowship award winners and have performed at the Kennedy Center, the Library of Congress and numerous National Folk Festivals. Dragon Art Studio will hold educational performances for school children across the valley, including Muldown Elementary School and Whitefish Middle School. Tickets are $12 adults, $10 seniors and $6 children and students available through the box office or online at www.whitefishtheatreco.org. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour before a performance.

Montana Repertory Theatre’s Educational Outreach will bring the “The Poe Project” to the black box theater in the Flathead Valley Community College Arts and Technology Building on Saturday, Oct. 31, Halloween night beginning at 7 p.m. “The Poe Project” marks MRT’s third successful collaboration with playwright Ron Fitzgerald, writer for the hit TV series “Friday Night Lights” and Showtime’s hit series “Weeds.” Directed by Deborah Voss, “The Poe Project” looks at Edgar Allan Poe’s macabre world as he struggles to invent the detective story. In under 50 minutes, the play features sections from Poe classics while joining Poe at his desk as he visits with his own poetic and frightening muses.
