Local students awarded

The Bissell School honor roll includes Nicholas Barr, Kaitlynn McDonald and Harry Workman, grades 5-6 gold (GPA 3.5-4.0); Evelina Morozov, grades 7-8 gold; Paul Bruce, Whitney Kemp and Eric Reed, grades 5-6 blue (GPA 3.0-3.49); and Amber Pickering, Tanner Stupack and Jayla Grilley, grades 7-8 blue.

Maxwell Schmidt, a junior at Whitefish High School, was recently inducted into the Flathead Valley Community College chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, the oldest and most prestigious honor society serving two-year colleges around the world. Schmidt is a Running Start student who attends classes at FVCC and the high school. After graduation, he plans to transfer to the University of Montana in Missoula to major in pharmacy.

Whitefish High School student Trenna Brown has received the inaugural Davidson scholarship from the Plum Creek Timber Co. She plans to study at the Rexburg, Idaho, campus of Brigham Young University. The annual scholarship will provide $5,000 for the first year of study and may be renewed, providing an annual $1,000 for three additional years.

Patrick McGunagle, a Whitefish High School senior, recently received an appointment to attend the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. In high school, McGunagle was the student body vice president, as well as president of the National Honor Society and the Environmental Club. He participated in the Envirothon, Key Club and Freeflow programs, and he ran cross country and track. He was also a National Merit Scholarship finalist.

Austin Berscheid, a Whitefish High School senior, was recently awarded a $1,000 music education scholarship by the Glacier Symphony and Chorale. Berscheid plays cello with the symphony, the Whitefish High School Orchestra, and the Whitefish Community Orchestra. He also sings, is a member of his school choir, and recently performed in the Alpine Theatre Project production of "High School Musical." He plans to attend Montana State University next year and to continue his study of music.

Ellen Scheffer, a senior at Whitefish High School was recently honored by the United Way Volunteer Center with a $500 United Way Community Service award. Scheffer volunteered 515 hours to activities including Flathead County Peer Court, Relay for Life, Northwest Montana Humane Society and the P.E.A.C.E. Project. She plans to attend Willamette University in Salem, Ore., where she will major in sociology.

Katherine Beach and Jessica Kuennen, of Whitefish, were named to the winter quarter dean's list at Seattle Pacific University.

Kellie Kalbfleisch and Amanda McFadden were named to the Carroll College dean's list.

David Reimer, of Whitefish, was named to the spring dean's list at Northwest Nazarene University, in Nampa, Idaho.

Jarred Krueger and Wes Steenhoven, of Whitefish, were named to the spring semester dean's list at the University of Montana Western-Dillon.

Holly Cullen, of Whitefish, was named to the spring dean's list at Susquehanna University.

Leslie Marie Cockrell, of Whitefish, was named to the spring dean's list at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla.

Brandon Shirtliff, of Whitefish, was named to the dean's list at North Dakota State University.

Jonathan Cameron, a 2008 graduate of Whitefish High School, has been named to the spring 2009 honorable mention list as a Discipleship Ministries student at Crown College, in Powell, Tenn.

Air Force Airman Nathaniel Schmidling, of Whitefish, recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Coast Guard Seaman Apprentice Jordan Karpinski, of Whitefish, recently graduated from an eight-week training program at the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J.
