Four-year-old hooks 5-pound rainbow

Shade Koster may be only 4 years old, but that didn't keep him from landing a big rainbow trout.

On May 22, Shade was fishing with family and friends at Lion Lake, just outside Hungry Horse.

"My son Shade had been bugging me all spring about fishing since he just got a new Spider-Man pole," his father Kit said.

About 1:45 p.m., Shade hooked into a fish that put a good bend in his rod.

"I helped him with the drag a little and when it was close to shore I could see he was close to coming off the hook, so I jumped in and grabbed him right as he was getting off," Kit explained.

What Shade caught was a 5-pound, 24-inch rainbow.

"This was his first fish in the wild," Kit said.

Last season, Shade's sister Raevin caught a nice sunfish at Blanchard Lake to celebrate her sixth birthday in style. It was the first fish she'd caught. Later, Raevin hooked a 20-inch bull trout on the reservoir.

"I may go trade my Ugly Stick for a Spider-Man rig since my own kids have been showing me up," Kit said.
