Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will offer a hunters education class after school at Somers Middle School in September. By state law, anyone born after January 1, 1985, must have completed the hunter education course to buy a hunting license in Montana.

The class at SMS will be offered from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on the afternoons of Sept. 9-11, 16-19 and 21. Participants must attend all sessions.

The minimum age for hunting in Montana is 12. At registration, a parent or guardian must accompany students under 18 to sign the registration form.

Sign-up will be at the FWP office in Kalispell only from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29.

Instructor Willa Burgess said parents are encouraged to attend the couses with their children.

"So many adults that hunt have a lot of bad habits that if we teach our kids, we don't do them any good," she said.

Burgess also said parents were encouraged because so much more than just firearm safety is being taught at the class.

"We encourage them to come through to see standards and ethics we're teaching," she said.

For more information, call John or Willa Burgess 212-8704.

There is no charge for the courses.
