Bigfork could drop to Class B in sports

The Bigfork High School volleyball recently claimed second place in the Northwestern A conference, and their boys soccer team made it to the state playoffs this year.

But now, because of declining enrollments at the school, the Montana High School Association notified school officials last week that Bigfork sports teams will be playing in Class B.

As of February, Bigfork High School has 326 students enrolled — one of the lowest numbers for Western Class A.

Dropping to Class B could mean the end of soccer at Bigfork unless the school can retain Class A status for that sport.

The school district has until Nov. 14 to appeal the decision. School superintendent Russell Kinzer surveyed school coaches and got a 50-50 response.

Lincoln County High School in Eureka chose to return to Class B in 2007 after one year of Class A sports in 2006.
