Marcille second at Bitterroot tennis tournament

| May 1, 2008 11:00 PM

Sarah Marcille took second in the singles event and the boys tennis team had also had a solid outing last weekend at the Bitterroot Invitational last weekend.

Marcille lost to Megan Madruga of Corvallis, 6-2, 6-1 in the final.

On the boys side, the doubles team of Grant Getts and Cody Maynard made it to the championship, but lost to Levi Pauley and Jake Sangster of Corvallis, 6-4, 6-2.

The double steam of Scott Hopkins and Billy Garcia made it to the semifinals but also lost to Sangster and Pauley.

"The kids did pretty well," boys coach Gary Yee said.

Yee noted the scores were incorrect in the daily papers. The Getts-Maynard match was a final, not a semifinal.

Yee continues to change some teams around. He's paired Garcia and Hopkins in doubles — they played doubles in a match for the first time this weekend with pretty good results.

He was also pleased with the doubles team of Tim Spencer and Vadim Zvyagelskiy, who made it to the semifinal round as well in 3-4 doubles.

The team also got two practice rounds on the new courts last week on Monday and Tuesday.

"It's wonderful to have four courts again," Yee said. He said the courts are a bit "grippy" rate now and players have had to make some adjustments.

"The big story for the Wildkats was Sarah outlasting Dillon's Velasco in the championship semifinals for a birth in the finals. She played very well against two quality opponents," girls coach Jerry Smalley said. Smalley was also pleased with the improved play of Franki Anderson and Pepper Borland in girls 3-4 doubles who improved their play.

The weather didn't help much at the end of last week. It either rained or snowed.

The team hopes to get its first match at home Thursday (today) against Whitefish in a match that was scratched last week because of weather. The girls start at 3 p.m. and the boys start at 5 p.m.
