For anyone wanting to participate in a mountain bike race but doesn't feel comfortable in the intense competitive atmosphere of most races, mark June 21 on your calendar.

The Granja del Cerdo, which translates to Pig Farm, is a family-oriented mountain bike race scheduled to take place at, you guessed it, the Pig Farm trails west of Whitefish.

"The Pig Farm is a really great place for not only advanced riders, but beginners as well. It has nice rolling terrain," said race organizer Craig Prather, of Great Northern Cycles. "We wanted to create a festival type atmosphere for this mountain bike race. We encourage people to dress up, pig-themed of course, and show off their wild side."

This is the test-run for this event, and Prather said he's expecting a good turnout.

"There really aren't that many mountain bike races in this area, besides the Thursday Night Race League on Big Mountain. That draws a lot of people, but we wanted something for everybody."

Prather said Farm to Market Pork has donated food for competitors and spectators to feast on during and after the races.

One of the main races will be a single-speed race.

"Single-speed is gaining popularity, and it's a little bit more challenging," Prather said. "It's a more pure style of riding. You have to be more efficient."

Prather said anyone can take part in the single-speed race regardless of what type of bike they bring because he and the mechanics on hand will be able to block out all their other speeds if necessary.

There will also be a hill climb and regular mountain bike races for all skill levels.

The festivities are set to begin at 11 a.m. at the Pig Farm trails, on Farm to Market Road west of Whitefish. For more information, visit online at www.greatnortherncyclingclub.wordpress.com or call 862-5321.
