There's no such thing as a free lunch

| June 12, 2008 11:00 PM

When was the last time you went to the grocery store and were given free food? When was the last time you went to the gas station and left without paying? (Last time we checked that was illegal.) When was the last time you turned on a light at home and did not have to pay an electricity bill?

Do people in this town really think that The Mountain is a God-given right, or that it costs nothing to operate? We find it hard to believe that anyone would expect a business to give away services for free.

Just because something has "always been" doesn't mean that it has always been right, or financially intelligent. How do you suppose we'd all feel about losing the privileges of having a mountain resort so nearby if it goes out of business? Refusing to pay for services will do just that.

Do we really want to hinder one of our local businesses, which helps to support all of us by bringing a lot of money into Whitefish?

Do you think Glacier National Park will build a tram down from Mount Brown? Highly unlikely. Heaven forbid we complete a hike — it just might interfere with our TV watching time.

Kristy Griffin and Hannah Beesley live in Whitefish.
