Club championship tourney coming up

| July 31, 2008 11:00 PM

The annual Club Cham-pionship Tournament is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 9-10.

The Championship will once again be divided into men's and ladies divisions for junior, regular and senior categories.

Players have the option as seniors to compete in both the senior and regular flights, according to their established handicaps.

Entry forms are currently available in the golf shop to register for the tournament. The entry $35 fee includes dinner following Sunday's round. The fee for junior members is $10 and also includes the barbecue after Sunday's round.

Nearly all of last year's champions will return to defend their titles from 2007. Expect to see Chelsea Ray challenging for the women's title, along with Karen Jacobson and others. In the men's category, Jason Johnstone, Carroll Lilly, Mike Watson, Chris Conners and Dave Morberg should lead the charge.

Red flag use

In an effort to accommodate players having some mobility issues or while recovering from surgery, the Whitefish Lake Golf Club issues those players a red flag to place on the their golf cart.

The flag allows the player to gain access to parts of the course that might otherwise be restricted due to course or weather conditions.

The red flag policy only applies in situations where cart-use has been restricted, such as the South Course on holes 6-13 and as otherwise determined by the staff.

The use of the red flag is for mobility-challenged players only and not the passenger. All carts are still expected to follow the 90-degree rule and to remain at least 30 feet from all greens.

All players utilizing a red flag are asked to check with the starter to sign an agreement, obtain the flag and to return the flag at end of the round.

Junior golf

The last regular Junior Tour event will be held on Monday, Aug. 4, at 1 p.m. at Eagle Bend Golf Course. The event is open to all local junior players with the ability to play competitive golf. As always, Junior Tour events are free and the host club donates the use of the course.

The Flathead Valley Junior Championship will also be hosted by Eagle Bend on Aug. 7 and is open to all area junior players. The entry fee is $25 and includes a practice round and lunch on the day of the tournament.

State championships

Jason Johnstone finished third at the Men's State Amateur Tournament in Bozeman last week and posted an impressive 66 on the third day of the tournament.

Reed Platke was tied for first place in his division after day one of State Junior Championship in Helena at the Bill Robert Golf Course. Platke's first-day even-par round of 72 was very interesting with six bogies, six pars and six birdies over the 18-hole round.

Joel Mallams was only a couple of shots out in his age group with an opening round of 78. Ryan Zalucky was two back from Mallams after the first.

Platke, Mallams and Zalucky are members of the Whitefish High School team, and their games are all rounding into shape for the coming season.
