The Columbia Falls girls soccer team righted the ship in a big way Saturday, beating Bigfork 4-0 at home.

Sophomore Kassi Hebert had a hat trick and Lindsey Henning opened the scoring on a direct kick at the 18-minute mark.

Bigfork players thought Henning's shot went over the goal and landed on the back of the net, but a host of fans as well as the referee — who saw it from a different angle — scored it a goal.

The controversy didn't matter anyway, as Hebert got her breaks, scoring three goals on sweet assists from Jamie Valov at the 25-, 47- and 48-minute marks.

"I thought Jamie and Kassi did real well," Kats coach Greg Trenerry said.

The girls also cleared the ball on defense much better overall and looked more healthy as girls seem to be recovering from nagging injuries.

Jylisa Fields and Ashli Fairbanks both had impressive stops on defense, as did Cedes McCloud.

Elena Potter and Shelby Wiebelhaus are also coming into form.

The Kats outshot the Vals, 12-7. Kats keeper Colyne Hislop also continued to shine, with six saves to preserve the shutout.

As a team the Kats stepped to the ball better and worked better in the mid-field.

"They did a lot of things better," Trenerry said.

But he also gave Bigfork credit.

"Bigfork is improved," he said.

CFHS is now 2-1-1 in conference play and 4-2-1 overall. The Kats play Polson at home today (Thursday) at 3 p.m. and then travel to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, on Saturday.

Mueller shares second at JV golf tourney

Frenchtown took the boys title while Whitefish finished first in the girls division of the West Glacier JV Golf Tournament held Sept. 13 at the short West Glacier Golf Course.

Led by medalist Casey Moen's sparkling score of 66, Frenchtown topped the boys teams with a 327 total. Columbia Falls Team I was second at 347, followed by Bigfork with 352, Whitefish Team I 357, Browning 362, Columbia Falls Team II 368, Whitefish Team II 391, Libby 398, Polson 399 and Bigfork Team II 402. Ronan did not have a team score.

Columbia Falls coach Gene Marcille said it's not unusual for Frenchtown and Browning to bring their varsity teams to the JV invitational.

Jordan Mueller earned a tie for second place individually. Mueller and Tyler Schiff of Whitefish both carded a 79. Rounding out the top five were Scott Taylor of Bigfork and Alex Sherry of Frenchtown, each with an 80.

For Columbia Falls, Nate Holt shot an 86, Chris Boka 89, Mike Cotton 93 and Zak Gardner 94.

Scores of the players on the Cats' Team II: Taylor Hopkins, 888; Ryan Watkins, 89, Nathan Trinastich, 92; Nathan Rawley, 98; Jake Ronish, 99; and Ian Gordan, 111.

Whitefish took the girls title at the JV invite with a 380 total. Then came Browning (417), Columbia Falls (435) and Polson (462). Libby, Ronan and Frenchtown had no team scores.

Heather Mathison of Polson was the girls medalist; she carded an 87. Also in the top five were Danielle McCully (89) and Ellen Scheffer (91) of Whitefish, Amy Williamson (93) of Polson and Lindsey Blass (95) of Frenchtown.

Kelsey DeWit of Columbia Falls tied for 10th with a 102. Also for the Kats, Jordanna Weimer had a 106, Olivia Williams 110 and Courtney Tamburelli 117.

The CFHS golfers have back-to-back tournaments this week, playing Thursday, Sept. 20 at Bigfork and Friday, Sept. 21 at Polson. Both tourneys begin at 10 a.m.
