Bulldog golfers keep rolling at Libby Invite

| September 13, 2007 11:00 PM

Last week, the Whitefish High School golf teams competed in the first-ever Glacier, Flathead and Whitefish Triangular event at Village Greens Golf Course.

On the girls side of the competition, the Bulldogs easily won the tournament with a score of 367.

Chelsea Ray led the squad with a round of 79, which included three birdies. Kiley McConnell was second with an 88, followed by BreAnna Cameron's 90. Quinn Micklewright helped the girls with a 92 over the Village Greens Course.

Sam Krause had the low round for the boys with a 73, but he ended up in third place, following Larry Iverson III of Glacier High School, who fired an even par 71.

The boys finished in second place, six shots behind winner Glacier High. Daniel Marcus took home fourth place with a very respectable 77, followed by Joel Mallams and Ryan Zalucky at 79. Andre Groschupf finished with an 81 for the Bulldogs.

On Saturday, the Bulldog golfers traveled to Libby to play at the new Cabinet View Golf Course against all of the Class A schools in the North Western Class A league. Both the boys and girls took home first-place honors in the tournament.

Ray once again was medallist, this time with an 82 over the Cabinet View Course. Cameron was second with an 86, followed by McConnell's 90. Micklewright finished in fourth place on the Whitefish squad, which placed well ahead of second-place Polson.

Zalucky was the low Whitefish boy, posting a 77 over the new track at Libby, and in second place over-all just one shot out of the lead. Marcus finished with an 81, followed by Mallams at 88 and Zach Maassen at 89. Groschupf finished with a 91 at Libby.

"The new Libby Course is a fun track to play, but not being familiar with layout or distances made scoring difficult for all the visiting players," coach Terry Nelson said. "It was good for the teams' confidence to win even without standout player Sam Krause, who was unable to attend the tournament."

This week, the JV boys will participate in the West Glacier Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 13. The varsity and JV teams will be busy qualifying for spots on the remaining tournaments scheduled for Sept. 18 and beyond.

"Some of the younger players are beginning to improve enough to challenge the varsity player in the qualifying rounds," Nelson said. "Players like Dylan Parr, Carl Talsma, Kyler Blades, Cole Havens, Tyler Schiff, Alex Fuehrer, Joe Blakemore and William Hotzfield are working hard and making great strides."
