Thanks for support of Babe Ruth baseball

| September 6, 2007 11:00 PM

To the editor,

Being the first year as president of Glacier Babe Ruth, I want to take the time to thank all the people that helped out and supported Glacier Babe Ruth this past year. If it was on the field or in the fireworks stand or up on the Whitefish Resort, everyone that put in their time was greatly appreciated.

We plan on growing to be the best program in the state of Montana and Pacific Northwest. Both the league and all-star teams did very well this past year. The future is here and we have a great outlook for baseball. As president, I want parents to know that your kids will have a great program to play in after little league. Babe Ruth baseball can be your kid's best time of his or her life. I experienced it as a kid and I know these boys did last summer, too.

I can honestly say that baseball is coming back and it couldn't be possible without the ones that are truly involved. We have a great chance to host a state tournament in 2008 and we are striving to host a regional tournament in the near future. It couldn't be possible without a community such as Columbia Falls, Whitefish and Bigfork. Thanks again.

Scout offers thanks for help with Eagle project

To the editor,

I want to acknowledge and sincerely thank all the individuals and businesses who helped me with my efforts to complete my Eagle Scout project. My project was a storage shed for playground equipment for Deer Park School, where I attended as an elementary student. Approximately 330 hours were spent planning and building the 10'x16' shed and it could not have been accomplished without a whole lot of help.

I would first like to thank my Dad and Mom, Ralph and Keni, who helped me every step of the way. I'd also like to thank the following people and businesses who donated supplies, expertise, labor or cash: Aaron Jordt Construction; my grandparents, Ken and Phyllis Ausk; Dean Calderwood, DDS; Citizen's Insurance; First Citizens Bank; Robert Friess, DDS; my aunt, Eliene Gridley; Ken Hinzman, Hunter's Well & Pump Service; Kaplan Law Firm; LHC, Inc.; Roger Newman, DDS; Plum Creek; RE/MAX Mountain View; Rhonda's Barber Shop; Shear Perfection; Sterling Title Services, Inc.; Western Building Center; and Whitefish Credit Union.

I also appreciate the support and cooperation given by former principal Mrs. Kim Anderson, principal Mr. Dennis Haverlandt and district clerk Mrs. Peggy Martin. Supplying labor were fellow Scouts Eric Boyd, Scott Boyd, Wesley Jackson, Alex Negron, Jon Riffey, Caleb Sobczak, Micah Sobczek and Nathan Woods, and our Scoutmaster of Troop 1941, Mr. Mark Riffey. Thanks much to them, also.

Judges needed who follow the law

To the editor,

When Judge Leslie Southwick was nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals, the American Bar Association gave him a rating of "highly qualified." They took a look at his decisions as a judge in Mississippi and concluded that our nation would be well-served to have him as a federal judge and gave him their highest rating.

Mr. Southwick's confirmation has been approved by the congressional Senate Judiciary Committee, but has been derailed by Senate Democrats as has happened in the past to other good nominations. It's important that the Senate nomination process be used to ensure good judges on our courts, and this man certainly fits the bill. He is known for following the law.

Please call the local offices of Sens. Max Baucus (256-1150) and Jon Tester (257-3360) and urge them to do their duty and give Judge Southwick a fair up or down vote!
