Last Thursday, the Bigfork Middle School Student Council gave back to its community with money it raised at an Oct. 26 dance.
Representatives of the student council presented Bigfork Fire Chief Chuck Harris and Captain Katie Edwards with a $250 check during their lunch hour. The students told Harris and Edwards they wanted the money to go toward the department's training center.
Harris said it was rare that student groups donated money to the department, and it was greatly appreciated.
"This will benefit more than just Bigfork Fire," Harris said. The two- to three-story training center, which the department hopes to build in order ignite and extinguish practice fires over and over, will also be used by the Ferndale and Creston departments most likely, Harris said. "It will be used for years."
Edwards echoed Harris' gratitude.
"It makes me proud that the kids feel this is important," Edwards said. "This fire hall is for everyone in Bigfork. It's theirs. The kids are showing good ownership."
The student council advisor, Brianna Anderson, said the representatives decided to donate the money after discussing community service ideas at their meetings.
"We're already planning for Christmas," she said.
