Bigfork Eagle

Donny Tudahl was the first Bigfork Viking to qualify for the state class A track and field meet at the Northwest A divisionals in Whitefish May 18-19. Andrew Whittaker and the 400-meter relay team followed suit.

Tudahl opened the divisional meet with a new personal best in the discus. Earlier this season he threw 144-7 at the Bigfork Invitational. Tudahl threw 150-0 for third place in the discus. Bigfork coach Nate Hammond said Tudahl would have to throw over 150 feet to place at state, a mark it looks like he will reach.

Whittaker clocked a time of 11.62 for third place in the 100-meter dash Saturday. He qualified for the finals from Friday’s time trials.

He will also compete as part of the 400 relay team, as will Dustin Haines. Haines placed sixth in the javelin with his throw of 161-4. The relay team is completed with Forrest Schiltz and Keenan Evans. The relay team was fourth with a time of 45.68.

“Overall, our kids really competed well,” Bigfork coach Sue Loeffler said. “I’m happy with their overall performances. We had a lot of young kids in stressful situations.”

The Vikings ended the divisional meet with a team score of 17 points.

The Class A state track and field meet begins at 9 a.m. both Friday and Saturday in Missoula at the Missoula County Stadium at Missoula Big Sky High School.

The number of Vals competing in throwing events at this year’s class A state track and field meet is one less than last year, but still impressive.

Seniors Kaemyn Meagher and Carly Hilley, and juniors Charlene Miller and Avery Vogel all qualified to compete in the state meet May 25-26 in Missoula. Meagher will compete in the discus and shot put, while the three others qualified in the javelin.

This marks the second year Meagher will throw disc at state. She threw a personal best of 109-5 1/2 at divisionals May 18-19 in Whitefish. She threw 33-4 in the shot put.

“Everyone stepped up,” she said. Her throw of 102 earlier this season placed her second in the conference, but 102 was only good enough for sixth place at divisionals. “I’ve got an idea of how it works,” she said of state. She added that her big goal is to place at the meet.

Meagher, who was second in the discus and fifth in the shot, also threw javelin, but did not place.

“I was nervous,” she said. “And my shoulder was hurting.” Meagher, who said it will be nice to not be the only Bigfork thrower at state, will have surgery on her shoulder at the end of the track and field season.

Vogel and Hilley recorded personal bests in the javelin with throws of 99-0 and 102-1. They finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Vogel also qualified for state in the high jump with her jump of 5-0. That was good enough for fourth place.

Miller is also going to state in two events. She threw 110-2 and was second in the javelin and clocked a time of 13.4 in the 100-meter dash. She finished the 100 in fourth place. Teammate Jill Hamilton was sixth with a time of 13.6.

Brittany Hall placed sixth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.22 and the Vals’ 1,600-meter relay team was fifth in 4:15.75.

The Vals were fifth as a team with 36 team points.

Events begin at 9 a.m. both Friday and Saturday at Missoula County Stadium at Missoula Big Sky High School.
