Boys remain undefeated in tennis

The Bulldog boys swept the top three places in singles matches at the Northwestern A Divisional tennis tournament this week at Flathead Valley Community College, in Kalispell.

Overall, the boys doubled the second-place Bigfork team, earning 64 points to the Vikings' 32.

The Lady Bulldogs placed second overall with 45 points, one point shy of tying first-place finisher Polson. In a disappointing match for Whitefish, Brielle Menegazzi was defeated in the championship singles match by Libby's Jackie Mee, 6-3, 6-2.

Menegazzi started out on the right foot, defeating Eureka's Sasha Trudeau, 6-0, 6-0, on Thursday, Libby's Veronica Cislo, 6-2, 6-1, on Friday, and Bigfork's Breanna Hughes, 6-2, 6-2, before taking on Mee. Menegazzi played Mee twice previously during the regular season, with split results.

In doubles, Kate Whitaker and Kimberly McIntyre took third, defeating a Polson duo, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Boys coach Kathy Cummings modestly expressed her view on the team's performance at divisionals.

"It was what we had hoped for," she said, adding that watching the doubles matches was one of the highlights of the week.

The singles championship match pitted Bulldog against Bulldog, as Matt Harris defeated teammate Ryan Rottenbiller, 6-4, 6-0.

Bulldog Ian Hosek defeated Libby's Steve Hauck to secure third place. Kyle Jacobson and Brendan Viscomi placed second in doubles.

On Monday, Cummings was busy hitting tennis balls to team members during another practice session at the local courts.

She said the team would arrive at Miles City for the state contest one day early so they could practice even more.

Their first game will be held Thursday at 7 a.m. The Bulldogs will face three tough teams, Cummings said — Corvallis, Havre and Billings Central.

"Hopefully, we can win it," she said.
