For Cory Schearer his best childhood memories started here in Columbia Falls. The family would drive over from Great Falls, hit the Big Sky waterslides, drive through Glacier up into Waterton, spend the night and then go back home.

That was living.

Those memories of Glacier enabled Schearer to co-design the new centennial logo for Glacier Park's 100th anniversary celebration. His design was picked from about 100 applicants late last week in a contest held by the Park. The Park turns 100 on May 11, 2010.

The winning entry received $3,000. The logo will be used in the Park s 100th anniversary celebration and marketing effort and is owned and licensed exclusively by the Park..

Schearer and illustrator Chad Patterson are far removed from Glacier now. They work for the Erwin-Penland Advertising Agency in Greenville, S.C.

But it was those memories that brought the logo to life, Schearer said in a phone interview on Tuesday.

I was excited more than surprised, Schearer said of the announcement. We re really happy with the logo.

The logo includes mountain goats hidden in the facade of Mount Reynolds as well as the Sun Road, bear grass, the old style-park typeface and pine trees.

Schearer s been with the advertising firm for 11 years, coming on board after he graduated from Bob Jones University. Today, he is vice president and group creative director with the firm. Schearer said he learned about the contest through his brother, Chad. Schearer and Patterson went to work for about a month, going through sketch after sketch to incorporate all the necessary elements into the logo.

The Park required a lot of elements in the design. The design had to include the words Glacier Park Centennial, 1910-2010, plus the words, Celebrate, Inspire, Engage.

The entries were judged by Wendy Hill of the Glacier Association, Assistant Superintendent Stephanie DuBois and Kathie Lapcevic of Glacier Country Tourism. The two men will split the prize money.
