Charlemagne (Chuck) Joseph L’Allier, Jr., 79, passed away July 26, 2007, at his home in Whitefish.

Chuck was born March 16, 1928, in St. Paul, Minn., to Charlemagne Joseph, Sr. and Edonne (Connors) L’Allier. He attended Flathead High School until he enlisted in the Navy in 1945 at 17 years of age.

Chuck was a senior chief in the Navy in World War II and Korea. While in the Navy, he was one of only four naval chiefs who traveled and checked all the naval ships’ food supply and service in the Pacific. From New Orleans to Guam he took charge of making sure the sailors had the best to offer.

He served on the USS Lexington and USS Tucson, among many other ships during his 22 years of service. Chuck was awarded six good conduct medals, the Korean Service, World War II Victory, Theater service, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and the Navy Occupation Service Medals.

After retiring from the Navy, he became the director of food services for Cal State-Northridge for 15 years.

In 1980, Chuck married Pat Cannaday, from Kalispell, and they owned and operated the property management division of the Whitefish Land Office. For the past 12 years, they spent winters in St. George, Utah, and enjoyed many summers at their cabin on Flathead Lake. Chuck enjoyed building, repairing, and helping anyone who needed his help. He was a fabulous cook and loved to cook for large groups of people.

Chuck is survived by his wife Pat, of Whitefish; brothers Gene, Russ and Jim L’Allier; step-mother Millie; daughter Michelle Bradford and husband John; grandchildren Brandon, Nicole and her husband Steve and great grandson Alistair; sons Steve and wife Jeran and grandchildren Shawn and Ryan, Richard and his wife Phyllis and grandchildren Brittney, and Corey, all of California; stepchildren Sheri and Don Anderson and grandchildren Ian, Isaac and Elise; Greg and Marie Cannaday and grandson Kaleb; Kirby and Ron Rierson and grandsons Chad and Corey Campbell, all of Kalispell; close family members Roger and Melissa Somerville, of Bozeman, and Sue and Geoff Young, of Australia; and several nieces and nephews and very close friends.

A private family urn burial took place at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery.
