Sure, the Columbia Falls softball team expected to be better this year.

But to shut out Libby right out of the gate was something really special. The Wildkats did just that, downing the Loggers 5-0 on strong pitching from Jennie Johnson and frosh Drew Walter, who picked up her first high school win.

The Kats took advantage of two Logger errors in the fourth inning to break a 0-0 tie. Amber James scored after an error after getting a single to start the inning. The Kats would tack on a couple of more runs for good measure, then added a run in the fifth and the sixth.

Walter gave up three hits and struck out seven. Johnson started and then closed the game in the seventh. She allowed one hit and struck out two.

James was 3-for-4 including a triple and Amanda Milliard was 2-for-4. Also picking up hits were Lindsey Nelson, Vanesha Riley, Kayla Stinger and Walter, who went 1-for-2 at the plate.

The Kats play next at home against Eureka April 10 after spring break. Gametime is 3 p.m. for varsity.
