Golfers win match play over Braves

| September 6, 2006 11:00 PM

The Whitefish boys golf team defeated Flathead High in match play this past Tuesday by a score of 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 in the four matches.

Led by the two-man team of Sam Krause and Derek Denning, the boys' two-person best-ball format got off to a good start by downing Larry Iverson and Jace Tyree.

Krause and Denning overcame a slow start and trailed by as much as three down before beginning their charge on the homeward trek on the back nine of the Whitefish Lake Golf Course's South Course.

Zac Wooten and Andre Groschupf managed to make up three holes to finish all square with their Flathead opponents in another gutsy finish.

The freshman pair of Joel Mallams and Ryan Zalucky rather easily won their match over the Flathead varsity opponents. Kyle Jacobson and Sean Watterud, however, fell behind early and couldn't manage to close the gap, falling to their opponents.

The girls were in good shape against the Flathead team when lightning at Big Mountain Club forced the match play event to end.

Chelsea Ray was playing great golf, keeping Quinn Micklewright and herself ahead of their Flathead opponents.

"The girls' side of the competition would have come down to the wire, with both sides competing very well," said coach Terry Nelson.

Breanna Cameron and Nicole Schelling were hanging in quite well, as were Ashley Archer and Hillary Johann. The freshman duo of Shelbi Long and Tayler Johnson were competing well when the storm moved in to force the end of the matches.

In JV play, the young Bulldog golfers competed in the Browning Invitational on Saturday, where both the boys and girls placed third overall.

Breanna Cameron paced the girls with her third-place finish, while Daniel Marcus led the boys team. Ashley Archer, Tayler Johnson, Ellen Scheffer and Naomi Barrett-Lanier competed for the girls, while Zach Maassen, Tyler Schiff, Joe Blakemore and Cole Havens rounded out the boys team.

Next week, the varsity will play in Missoula on Thursday and Libby on Saturday.
