Save the trees

| November 15, 2006 11:00 PM

We are disappointed and frustrated. As we enter Whitefish, we are faced with a huge spreading scar caused by chainsaws. Stumptown is back and uglier than ever.

Who approved the scores of beautiful, mature evergreens being cut? City council? Planning board? Planning department? Park department? Other city officials? Nobody?

After electing, appointing and hiring city employees, we expect them to work to find every way to protect what remains of the character of Whitefish we all live here to enjoy.

The essential nature of the town is being altered by careless tree cutting, earth moving and building. Water quality is being diminished around the town and around the lake. We need more vigilant overseeing.

We ask for safeguards to protect our environment. Our officials need to make sure every project, from a home to a business, does not destroy the personality of greater Whitefish.

They also need to find ways to stop "surprise" tree cutting, such as ordinances similar to Columbia Falls' tree-cutting plot-review for all trees eight inches in diameter and bigger.

We also need developers to pay their full way in the form of "impact fees." Present citizens should not pay for the new roads, sewers, schools and all the extra expenses, such as new sewer plants, expensive electric and gas lines, bridges and extra fire, police, maintenance people, etc.

We need to monitor the work of our city employees. Are they doing their jobs finding areas for needed new city parks, levying fines against those who violate ordinances and laws, and doing the necessary short and long-term planning to protect and enhance the livability of our town?

Please prevent an unnecessary return to Stumptown. Thank you.
