Hollywood invaders
I look out my front window today and see a changing landscape. No, I'm not speaking of the colors of fall arriving to signal the transition of seasons. Nor the snow-capped peaks surrounding the valley floor. I'm not referring to the frost on my windshield every morning when I awaken.
All of these things are just part of an uncontrollable reality which comes from living in a mountain town. I'm writing due to the recent invasion of Whitefish by a horde of Hollywood elite, for lack of a better term.
Roads were closed, parking spaces were eliminated and a virtual red carpet was laid out welcoming so-called "reality TV" to do as they please.
Who approved all of this action? I happen to know that the permit required to shut down a street must go through the city council and then be pushed across the desk of the city manager, fire chief, and the chief of police.
I find it hard to believe that all of these city officials, whose jobs are to serve the citizens of Whitefish, could blindly allow this parade to occur.
The values I have learned growing up in this area do not include exploiting our town on national television. I understand our economy thrives on tourism and visitors from beyond the Flathead Valley.
However, I do not see one aspect of the "Hollywood Zoo" visiting Whitefish to be beneficial in any manner. This place has a soul which embraces neighbors, the outdoors, small town culture, peace and quiet.
Next time we're asked to sell our soul, I hope we as a community choose more wisely.
