Protecting our Seniors

| November 1, 2006 11:00 PM

Senior citizens deserve the best of what America can offer: security in life and good health. But lately, our elected officials have been playing politics with senior issues. We need a fresh start.

I'm Ric Smith and I pledge to put seniors before politics - as it should be. While politicians in Helena worry about getting back at each other, I have been thinking beyond the petty arguments and finger pointing.

First, I will examine what it will take to establish our own health care system in Montana. We can't rely on the federal government for much, especially to solve our health care troubles. I will lead our state in bringing about better health care and lower prescriptions.

Second, I will lead Montana in moving to acquisition-based property taxes (taxes based on the value of your home when you bought it that remain constant as long as you own it.) That way, appraisers will never come raise your property tax just because a mansion is built next door. It's about common sense and good policy for our seniors.

As I hope you see, I will always put seniors ahead of politics. And I'm not just talking about it - I'm doing it by pledging to lead on two critical issues for seniors: better health care and property tax relief.

Sincerely,

Ric Smith
