Go vegan

| August 24, 2006 11:00 PM

If you think the production of foie gras is a cruel process, you might be interested in what goes on in the production of other animal-for-food products. I won't get into it here, but I recommend a book by John Robbins titled The Food Revolution to anyone interested in finding out the truth about the barbaric practices used in the animals for food industry. The book is not about opinions on the subject; it contains well researched facts.

I am a little curious why foie gras production has been singled out when the treatment of cattle, sheep, chickens, horses and pigs is equally horrendous. Veal production is unbearably sad for both the cow and her calf.

Maybe the banning of foie gras is a start for cruelty awareness, but I don't see our nation turning vegan anytime soon. If you are going to boycott an establishment that offers foie gras, you should also include places that offer animal products of any type, but that won't leave you with many places to dine out — closer to none around here, anyway.

I am vegan, however, and perhaps a few less animals won't get tortured because of it. It's a very sad subject.
