Craig Nelson, of Whitefish, hit a hole-in-one at the fourth hole at Par 3 on 93 on Sunday, July 17. Witnesses Michelle and Dakota Nelson report he used a pitching wedge on the 130-yard hole.

Olympic-caliber equestrians will compete at The Event at Rebecca Farm, on Spring Creek Road north of Kalispell, July 22-24. The event is one of 10 Adequan USEA Gold Cup Series intermediate and advanced level competitions held across the country. Riders and their horses go through three phases of competition — dressage in a ring, show-jumping and cross-country gallops over natural terrain. The event tentatively begins at 9 a.m. Friday and Sunday and 8 a.m. on Saturday. Admission is free. For more information, go online to www.eventatrfarm.com.

Friends of Langley will hold their second annual ski-slope grooming party on Saturday, Aug. 6. Skiers interested in clearing shrubs and brush from the Langley ski run on Big Mountain will meet at the bottom of the Glacier Chaser chairlift at 8:15 a.m. Volunteers should bring hand saws, loppers or any hand tools that would be useful in cutting trees and shrubs. Limit is 40 volunteers. A free "Friends of Langley" T-shirt and lunch will be provided. For more information, call 862-2900.

Whitefish soccer coach Lini Reading was named to the finalists list for National Coach of the Year by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association.

The North Valley Shooting Foundation recently received a $5,812 grant from the Friends of National Rifle Association for repair of the roof at their gallery range. Friends of NRA hold annual fund-raising dinners each year, and local shooting groups can apply for grants to help finance their programs. Many of the Flathead Valley rifle/pistol and air gun groups use the indoor range for training and competition matches, including Whitefish Rifle and Pistol Club, Whitefish Junior Rifle Club, Flathead Valley Community College handgun classes, Whitefish and Columbia Falls hunter education field courses and NRA firearms instructor classes. Local, regional and national indoor competition matches are also held at the gallery range.

Mark McGlenn, of Whitefish, and Cory Potter, of Hungry Horse, earned the rank of 1st Dan Black Belt on June 4 at American Karate Academy in Whitefish after years of consistent effort and hard work.
