Carvel Artley
Lt. Col. Carvel R."Bud" Artley, 82, passed away at North Valley Hospital on July 7, 2005, after a long battle with cancer.
Artley was born in Vermillion, S.D., Oct. 14, 1922, the son of G. Kenneth and Eleanor (Rutherford) Artley. He attended school in Vermillion and graduated from Vermillion High school in 1940. He attended the University of South Dakota until enlisting in the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet program during World War II.
Upon graduation as a second lieutenant and pilot, he was assigned to an advanced fighter pilot unit in Hammond, La., for training before being transfer to Ninth Air Force, 362nd Fighter Group, 377th Fighter Squadron in England.
While training in Louisiana, he and the love of his life, Dorothy Jane Bunker, of Yankton S.D., were married Dec. 11, 1943.
Artley flew 84 missions in P-47 Thunderbolt fighter bombers, from England before D-Day and then on the continent supporting Patton's Third Army across France. His military career after World War II included duty with Air Defense Command, Iceland Air Defense Force, Keflavik Iceland; Military Air Transport Service, San Antonio, Texas, and Dover, Del.; Southern Air Command, Panama Canal Zone, 315th Air Commando Wing, 311th Air Commando Squadron in DaNang, Vietnam; and Tactical Air Command, Langley AFB, Va.
He ended his military career at Langley AFB VA flying VC-118 aircraft and as Personal Pilot for the Commanding General United States Army Continental Command, Fort Monroe VA.
Artley was awarded two Silver Star Medals, the Distinguished Flying Cross, a Purple Heart, 20 Air Medals, the Meritorious Service medal, the Army Commendation Medal, two Presidential Unit Citations, two Air Force outstanding Unit Awards and numerous other awards, service and theater ribbons with battle stars.
On retirement in 1971, Artley and his wife moved to Whitefish in 1992 to be near their sons and grandchildren, and where they built their final home.
Artley was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers-in-law, one infant grandson and one nephew.
Artley is survived by his love of 62 years, his wife Dorothy; their two sons, Donald Artley and wife Suzanne, of Florence, and Douglas Artley and fiancee Gini Scotten, of Whitefish; three sisters, Gwen Biersbach, of Mobridge, S.D., Eleanor McDonald and Sally Meisenholder and her husband Mark, of Fallbrook, Calif.; sister-in-law Donna Davidson, of Red Bluff, Calif., grandchildren Rachael and husband Mike Petitt, of Portland, Ore., and Matthew and Jennifer Artley, of Denver, Colo.; four great grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and six nieces and five nephews.
Col Artley requested no services be held. He has been cremated, and his ashes will be scattered on the family land near Whitefish.
Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Northwest Montana.
Roy Owen
Roy Alvin Owen, 94, a longtime Whitefish resident, passed away July 8, 2005, at his home of natural causes.
He was born Nov. 9, 1910, in Bisbee, Ariz., the son of Luther and Mamie Owen.
Roy was a professional golfer and stationary pro, and he taught and worked at the Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle, Wash., the Butte Country Club in Butte, the Hillcrest Country Club in Boise, Idaho, and finally 23 years at the Whitefish Lake Golf Club, where he retired in 1977.
As a pro, he was renowned for his golfing abilities, especially his putting and iron abilities. He set several course records during his career.
He and Gertrude celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary and were working on their 71st.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Gertrude E. Owen, in Whitefish; daughters Patricia Porter, of Laughlin, Nev., and Barbara Cannon, of Woodburn, Ore.; grandsons Robert Porter, Tim Cry and Michaell Cry, all of Oregon; and great grandchildren Katherine Porter, Jacob Porter and Rosemary Porter, all of Oregon.
No services are planned and arrangements are under the direction of the Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish.

Mary Larsen
Mary Josephine Larsen passed away peacefully on July 7, 2005, at age 74 in Shoreline, Wash.
She was born May 1, 1931, in Great Falls to John Anthony Lindsay and Susan Churchill Lindsay. Mary Jo moved with her family to Whitefish in 1940, where her family owned and operated the Orpheum movie theater.
After graduating from Whitefish High School in 1949, Mary Jo was crowned queen of the first Whitefish Winter Carnival that same year. She received her degree in English Literature from the College of Great Falls in 1954 after attending Holy Names College in Spokane in 1950 and the University of Portland in 1951-52.
She married Leonard (Len) Larsen in 1954 and moved to Seattle, where Len worked for the Boeing Company as an engineer. After living in Connecticut and Southern California in early 1960s, they moved to Seattle permanently in 1965.
Mary Jo will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Her great intelligence and wit will be deeply missed by all her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Leonard Conrad II, in January 2005, and her daughter Susan Lynn in 1985.
She is survived by four children, Mary Kay Talbot and husband Dave, Karen Teresa Jacobson and husband Jake, Joanne Fitzmorris and Leonard Conrad III and his friend Mark Klungland; and five grandchildren.
The Larsen family would like to thank Dr. Douglas Lee and his staff, and the staffs of Northwest Hospital, Richmond Beach Rehabilitation Center and Providence Hospice for their care during Mary Jo's battle with cancer.
The family has arranged for private services.

Emma Fredrickson
Emma Lou Fredrickson, 82, passed away of natural causes Friday, July 8, 2005, at the Kalispell Regional Hospital.
Emma was born June 18, 1923, in Enderlin, N.D., to Walter and Ellen Kaber. The Kaber family moved to Whitefish in 1935. Emma attended school in Whitefish and graduated from high school in 1941.
She went on to college at Northern College in Havre and became a teacher. She taught school in Brockton and Markus, Wash. In Markus, she met and married Bert E. Fredrickson, and they were married at the Hitch'n Post in Couer d'Alene, Idaho, on June 5, 1948.
Emma started teaching in Whitefish in 1962, where she taught English and literature. She went back to school at the University of Montana and received her master's degree in library science. She then became librarian at Whitefish Junior High School and later Whitefish High School. She retired in 1996.
Emma Lou loved to teach. Teaching students not how to read, but how to love to read, was her passion. She also enjoyed playing cards. If you didn't know how to play cribbage, she would teach you.
For the last three years, she has been cared for by her granddaughter-in-law Mary Umbriaco.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bert, her brothers Marvin and Louis Kaber, and her sister Lois Hull.
Emma is survived by her daughters Mary Ellen Harker, in Kalispell, and Thea Lou Roach, and husband Jay, in Columbia Falls; her son Dirk David Fredrickson, in Alamosa, Colo.; her brothers Harvey Kaber, in Laurel, and Larry Kaber, and wife Charlotte, in Kalispell; grandchildren Lisa, Amie, Jamie and Jackie Harker, Jason, Benjamin, Samuel and Peter Umbriaco, and Cassie, Erin and Dane Fredrickson; 10 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial celebration of Emma Lou's life Thursday, July 14 (today), at 10 a.m. at the Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish, with Rev. John Bent, officiating. Burial will follow at the Whitefish City Cemetery.
The family suggests that memorials be made to the Whitefish City Library.
Alfred Lauritsen
There will be a memorial celebration for longtime Whitefish resident Alfred Lauritsen on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at 1 p.m. on Big Mountain by the fish pond under Chair 1.
Alf died on Jan. 22, 2005, of a heart attack. All who knew Alf are cordially invited to attend. There will be a get together immediately following at Jeanne Tallman's house at 967 Colorado Ave. in Whitefish.
