Card parties

Canyon Quick Response Unit will be starting their pinochle card parties on Friday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m. at the QRU building in Martin City. The parties will continue every Friday and Saturday evening until March

26. The parties are open to everyone-even beginners.

Plants talk

Lihn Davis, Flathead National Forest botanist, will be giving a slide show on sensitive plants of the Flathead National Forest at the Wednesday, Jan. 19, 7 p.m. meeting of the Flathead Chapter of the Montana Native Plant Society at the Mountain View Mennonite Church in Creston.

Birth stuff sought

The Birth Center at North Valley Hospital in Whitefish is creating a nostalgic theme for their newly remodeled department. One focus of this is to use shadow boxes filled with vintage baby items, including caps, gowns, booties, small blankets and baby toys.

The hospital is requesting the communities' help in donating items and would appreciate receiving as many as possible by Jan. 18. Items will be recorded and returned to donors as requested. Items can be brought to the Community Relations Department Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

NVH open house

A community open house is planned on Thursday, Jan. 20, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. for The Birth Center, new MRI and Health Resource Library at North Valley Hospital. The hospital is celebrating the 100th year of the hospital being located in Whitefish.

Adult ed

Rod Cogliati will be instructing a metals course for six-weeks starting Thursday, Jan. 20, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Columbia Falls High School Metals Lab. The course covers proper care and use of metal working equipment, cutting torches and general basic-welding skills. The course is designed for individual projects. The registration fee of $60 covers instruction, use of equipment and scrap metal. Students will need to provide their own project materials.

Ken Bartlett will be offering a six-week course on digital camera photography and digital editing starting Wednesday, Jan. 26, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Glacier Gateway Computer Lab. The course is designed around learning the functions of personal digital cameras and then editing pictures. The registration fee is $35, and the course requires experience with Windows XP and basic computer operating skills. Call Jan Graham at 892-6562 for further information or registration forms.

Student of the week

Beth Karper, a sophomore at Columbia Falls High School, has been selected student of the week for the week of Jan. 10. She was nominated because she has a good work ethic and is helpful to her peers. The faculty and staff make nominations for student of the week. Beth is the daughter of Doug and Colleen Karper, of Columbia Falls, and receives a personal pan pizza compliment of Pizza Hut.
