Whitefish Lake Golf Club awards new champions
New Club Champions
Steve Gold captured the title of Men's Whitefish Lake Golf Club Champion for 2005 with rounds of 74-69. Steve edged out Jason Johnstone by two shots over the two-day event.
Gold birdied number 16 to go two up, but then bogeyed 17 to make it back to one shot separating the leaders. Johnstone's tee shot on 18 drifted high and right, which didn't leave him a chance to go for the green in two on the 550-yard par five hole.
Gold nailed his tee shot straight down the middle and hit his approach to within a few yards of the green. As it turned out, Gold converted for par and Johnstone made bogey from the back bunker.
On the women's side, two high school stars battled it out in a playoff to decide the 2005 championship. Maresa Jenson had the first day lead with an impressive 75 on the North Course.
However, on day two, 15-year old Chelsea Ray fired 43 on the front, followed by a two under 34 on the back nine of the South Course to create the tie.
In the playoff for the medal, Ray hit her tee shot down the middle, while Maresa ended up with an unfortunate lie under a bush.
Ray became the youngest ladies club champions ever at Whitefish Lake Golf Course. Their performance obviously made the high school golf coach very happy.
In the senior division, with no surprise, Carroll Lilly and Dave Morberg completed the tournament tied for the lead and were declared co-champions for 2005. The "grinder," Rodger Hankins, finished in third place with rounds of 76-76. Ellen O'Hara easily repeated as the champion for the senior women.
Chelsea Ray and Tyler Holtet captured the junior golf honors for the season. Tyler Holtet fired 74-74 on both days to outdistance Chris Conners who shot 72-79 for an impressive two-day outing.
