Shirley Mae (Breitenfeldt) Barrow
Shirley Mae (Breitenfeldt) Barrow, retired, died at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, in Trail, British Columbia, on Sept. 22, 2004, at the age of 74.
She was cremated with her cowboy boots and hiking boots, and the ashes will be distributed in Montana and British Columbia. Shirley was born May 25, 1930, in Wibaux to Ervin and Miriam Breitenfeldt. She grew up on a farm and attended the Baird School and the Wibaux County Grade and High School. She was married in May 1948, and resided in Wibaux, Fromberg, Missoula, Whitefish, and Martin City, before immigrating to Rossland, B.C., in 1990.
Some of her favorite pastimes, activities and employments were fishing, milking cows, breaking and riding horses, training Hereford bulls for the show ring, buckraking hay, killing rattlesnakes, riding trail bikes, fishing, playing pool and snooker, hunting rabbits, prairie dogs, elk, deer, pheasants, and hunting coyotes on land and from a homemade airplane, pumping gas, meat cutting, reading, writing, Cub and Boy Scout and Campfire Girl activities, skiing, winning pool trophies, reservations assistant, marketing director, backpacking outfitter, camping, hiking, fishing, canning fish, and cribbage.
She was the first licensed backpacking outfitter in the state of Montana. After 1990 she took up snooker, and medaled several times at the B.C. Senior Games, receiving two gold medals for Snooker in the Senior Games for all of Canada. One of the gold medals was won in Regina, Saskatchewan, and the other in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
In 1998 she went downhill, to a new home in Trail, due to 24 feet of snowfall that winter. In the next 20 years she had planned to play golf, curling, and more snooker. She left pool cues to each of her eight grandchildren, and told them not to brag to people how good they were, but to show them. She expressed appreciation for all of the many prayers and memories sent to her by her many friends in her last days. Thank you to Doctors Scully, Scotland O'Flanagan and Dala Lana.
Shirley is survived by her sister, Beverly (Charles) Deshaw of Billings, her three children, Deyanne (Edward) Davies and granddaughter Mariah of Rossland, B.C., Dennis (Joan) Barrow and grandchildren Sean Ryan, Tyra, Michael and Denise of Columbia Falls, and Curtis (Leslee) Barrow and granddaughters Kirsten and Caitlin of Great Falls, numerous cousins, and many friends from coast to coast in both countries.
A celebration memorial service will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #11, Trail, on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the donor's choice and would be appreciated by the family.
