The Columbia Falls MatCats wrestling team went an impressive 51-19 in Ronan over the weekend to finish third at the 2019 Western Montana Duals.

Six MatCat wrestlers went undefeated at the event, including Orion Barta, Thomas Peters, Lucas Thacker, Colten McPhee, Jakob Freeman and Taylor Glaudeau as Columbia Falls went 6-1 as a team.

“It went really well for us in Ronan. We are starting to get our lineup a little more solidified and we are wrestling well. I think we are starting to turn a corner and we are on the right track,” head coach Jessie Schaeffer said. “Anyone who goes undefeated is wrestling well. Lucas Thacker had a great weekend for us. He wrested some quality kids and did outstanding. Colten McPhee is on track for the pin record and Freeman and Gladeau and wrestling well, too.”

Thirty nine of the Cats’ 40 victories at the tournament that were not forfeits came via pin, including six pins by Barta, five by Peters, Isaac Balla and Thacker and four each from McPhee, Freeman and Gladeau.

Ayden Role and Sam Despain each picked up three pins while Despain also earned a 6-5 decision over Hamilton’s Noah Hurst.

The Cats’ only loss of the weekend came against AA Glacier, 42-21.

The MatCats will be back in action at Polson Thursday before traveling to Missoula for the Rocky Mountain Classic Friday and Saturday.
