Girls have tough losses to Ronan, Bigfork

| January 22, 2025 8:15 AM

The Columbia Falls girls basketball team dropped a pair of games last week: A heartbreaker to Ronan in overtime, 58-55 on the road and then a 75-47 loss to Bigfork at home Saturday night.

The Wildkats were up 5 with 1:15 left in the fourth against Ronan when they let the lead slip away.

Then Ronan outscored them 9-6 in OT to win it.

Coach Jeremy Grilley said the squad just committed too many turnovers in that game. They had more than 30.

Against Bigfork, Grilley said the girls actually played better. They cut the lead to just 12 in the third.

Bigfork features Braeden and Paeton Gunlock, two of the best players in the state, and they put up 47 of the Valkyries’ points.

Grilley made some personnel changes in that game, putting Alexa Friske at the point. She did well, he said and the girls didn’t have as many turnovers and were competitive.

“They played really tough,” he said. "The plan going forward is to keep things simple and work on pose, composure, and patience," Grilley said.

The conference play is just starting and the Kats have plenty of games ahead of them to improve.

The team is very athletic. This week they face Libby at home Thursday and Whitefish on Friday, as they look to get a couple of games in the win column. The girls are 2-6 on the season.
