Twins drop Mission Valley Mariners at Memorial Field
By WHITNEY ENGLAND
The Glacier Twins took down a conference foe twice on Sunday at Memorial Field.
Glacier beat the Mission Mariners in both games of a Father’s Day doubleheader — winning the opener 3-1 and securing three runs in the bottom of the sixth in the second game to take it 4-1.
With the weekend victories, the Glacier Twins improved their season record to 15-3. The team’s only losses have come from the Mariners, Kalispell Lakers A and Missoula Mavs AA teams.
On Sunday, the Twins wasted little time in the first game as they took a 3-run lead over the Mariners in the bottom of the first inning. Twins’ Mason Peters got across the plate first on an error by the Mariners. Then Glacier’s Jake McIntyre drove home teammates Mikey Glass and Hayden Meehan when he doubled on a line drive to center field.
The Twins held onto the 3-0 lead the entire game until giving up a single run in the top of the seventh inning. Peters pitching calmly closed out the game with a couple of strikeouts.
Peters pitched seven innings for the Twins, only allowing three hits and one run while striking out three players.
In the latter game, Glacier got on the scoreboard first yet again with one run off a Meehan single in the first inning. The Mariners tied it up in the top of the sixth with a run, but the Twins found their offensive stroke in the bottom of the inning. Glacier piled on three runs as McIntyre was hit by a pitch to advance one home and then J Ruther singled on a line drive to left field which gave time for two more Twins players to score. The Mariners were three-up-three-down in the top of the seventh.
Talon Murphy was on the mound for the Twins. The pitcher gave up one run on two hits over five innings.
The Glacier Twins were set to play two games in Missoula after press time on Tuesday. The Twins will host the Ed Gallo Wood Bat Tournament this weekend. Games begin Thursday and run through Sunday at Memorial Field.
