The Columbia Falls boys basketball team got a key conference win Saturday night, edging Whitefish 50-49.

The Bulldogs had a last second trey to try and tie it, but it didn’t drop. Bulldog Talon Holmquist grabbed the rebound and put in a field goal as time expired for the final score.

The Wildcats were led by Jace Hill who had 27 points, six rebounds and five assists. Alihn Anderson had nine and Mason Peters had seven.

Cody Schweikert had three blocks.

The Cats did a good job of taking care of the ball — they had just nine turnovers.

Coach Chris Finberg would have liked to see the team do a bit better job of preserving its nine point lead with three minutes left, but he was pleased with the win.

“We took care of the ball and offensively we took good shots. Jace got open in the key a lot,” he said.

They were supposed to play Ronan Thursday, but Ronan had several players out due to Covid-19 protocols.

That game is rescheduled for 7:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14.

The Cats face conference foe Browning on the road this Thursday, then play Class B Loyola Saturday at home. The Browning game is a key matchup. The Cats lost to the Indians by a point at home earlier this season, and it’s always tough to get a victory in Browning.

The boys are now 5-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
