The Columbia Falls golf team has some of the best numbers in years under new head coach Josiah Osborne.

Osborne was better known as a standout football and track athlete for the Wildcats a several years ago as a student, but he also knows his way around a golf course and the game of golf.

Today Osborne is in his third year teaching social studies at the high school.

This year’s squad has 24 athletes total.

“That’s a great number,” Osborne said last week. “When kids are involved in (sports) they have better test scores and graduation rates.”

It’s a young squad, however and it will take some time to become competitive. The Wildcats already hosted a junior varsity and varsity tournament this season.

The varsity tourney was at Meadow Lake last week.

Junior Jaeger Mohr led the team with a 96. Eddie Chisholm shot a 119 for the girls. The boys were third as a team. The girls only have two varsity golfers.

Whitefish won the team and individual honors.

At Whitefish Monday, the boys team took fifth.

The goal is to increase the number of girls on the team and get golfers qualified for the state tournament, which is the first weekend in October in Polson.

Osborne is assisted by David Johnson, the golf pro at Meadow Lake.

He’s a big help, Osborne notes.
