There have been about half a dozen incidents this fall where grizzly attack victims failed to use bear spray, although its efficiency is now beyond doubt. Several of these latest victims were seriously injured, but others got lucky or successfully used a rifle. The latest victim happens to be a person closely placed in the Ostrom clan’s family tree.

The Bergs and Heaphys did it again. We had another great North Fork Thanksgiving. Of course, they always tell me that they have a lot of help. I’m sure they do—Ray Brown does a ham, Joe Novak does two gallons of great gravy, Bonny Ogle does a turkey, Trish Walsh does several dozen deviled eggs and the list goes on and on. Everyone brings food but the purchase and delivery of turkeys and ham for cooking is done by the Bergs. When I stop by Sondreson Hall early on Thanksgiving, it is always Bergs and Heaphys who have started the fire and decorated the Hall. Many thanks to them for all of the above and more.

Saying goodbye to a good friend
Last week, we knew that John Frederick’s illness was terminal and that he would be gone soon. His last days were filled with a constant stream of friends who came to say goodbye. I know he recognized and spoke to some and probably was in a coma for much of the time. The biggest thing was that he was kept comfortable, in no pain, and surrounded by friends. Now he is gone and is already sorely missed.

A campfire grizzly story
Last week, in this famous newspaper, Editor Chris Peterson ran the “second most” terrifying story of a grizzly bear trapping mishap I can remember. It was the kind a reporter and his readers can never forget. That incident was all too real and there were pictures to prove it. The victim, veteran Game Warden Louis Kis, was badly injured and was lucky to have lived through it. I got chills while he was telling me about it 30 years ago.
