On Dec. 1, I became homeless. I spent the first few nights back in Whitefish where I have lived off and on since 2003 with an old friend and former roommate. He had family coming in, so when the first cold spell was almost over, I found a ride from Kalispell to Missoula with my dog, Java.

Gone Fishing: longtime fisheries manager retiring

 As a 10-year-old boy growing up just outside Helena, Jim Vashro took it upon himself to become a junior fisheries biologist, embarking on a dedicated angling schedule coupled with meticulous record keeping. Over the span of the fishing season, he averaged six days of fishing per week and he kept a diary about the size, species and other characteristics of the 974 fish he caught that season.

The move was designed to undermine coal mining in Montana, but the precedent they would set could be used against other industries — like Montana agriculture, timber, and manufacturing — in the future.

Big Mountain opening this weekend

Skiers and snowboarders hitting the slopes on opening day at Whitefish Mountain Resort this Saturday will have access to nearly 100 percent of the terrain on Big Mountain, including Hellroaring Basin. It’s the first time in its 17 year existence that Hellroaring Basin will be accessible for skiing on opening day.

Baucus tax reform proposal is bad for energy industry

It started out as an ambitious plan. Sen. Max Baucus’ “clean slate” approach to federal tax reform had initial support from interests on both sides of the aisle. It was supposed to overhaul our bloated, incomprehensible tax code. It was supposed to clean up the hodgepodge of tax credits, lower tax rates, and make the entire structure more equitable for everyone.

Last week, a remarkable exchange about the future role of the U.S. military in Afghanistan took place on the MSNBC television program “Andrea Mitchell Reports.” In a discussion of the U.S. government’s uncertain negotiations with Afghan President Hamid Karzai over the continued presence of U.S. troops beyond 2014, NBC’s chief foreign correspondent, Richard Engel, pointed out that, between the Karzai talks and the negotiations with Afghanistan’s next-door neighbor Iran, the Obama administration has a daunting task.
