Relay raises more than $28,000
The local Relay for Life chapter raised $28,631 at the June 18-19 walkathon at the Whitefish High School practice field. They fell in love with the area and were impressed by the many projects undertaken and completed by the community. After repeated visits, and liking the available life style, they decided to make this their home. In 2001, they purchased a home on Big Mountain from which they indulge their passion for skiing.

Another year down
June 1 marked my two year anniversary at the Bigfork Eagle. The day came and went without me even noticing. That was greatly due to the fact that it was a Tuesday, which is our production day and a day that is notorious for having little time to think about anything but the Eagle. However, the following day I realized what I had missed, and then I realized something more – time is flying by.

James Michael Collins
James Michael (Mike) Collins, 61, passed away at his home in Evergreen on May 15, 2010. He was born on April 2, 1949, in Spokane, Wash. The family moved to Columbia Falls where he attended school and graduated in 1967. He attended FVCC focusing on forestry. In 1969, Mike joined the Army National Guard, where he attended Officers Candidate School and later became a captain. He was highly recognized for his excellence in leadership, selflessness, and dedication to his unit, and received numerous prestigious commendations. His peers and superiors described Mike as a "diamond among many gems". He retired from the National Guard in 1993 after 34 years of service. During his service with the Guard, he also worked for the Forest Service and the Department of State Lands for several years, after which he went to work for Semitool for many years, until April of 2007.

The artwork of John Fery will be on display at the Hockaday Museum of Art from June 15 through Sept. 18, with an opening reception Thursday, June 17, from 5-7 p.m. Fery studied in Europe at Dusseldorf Academy in Germany. His first experience with America was bringing European nobility on hunting trips through the Northwest in 1892-1893 He painted the landscape of the American West during these trips. Fery made an important contribution in the creation of Glacier National Park through his work. He was commissioned by the Great Northern Railroad to paint the scenery along its route and in the Park to attract people to the area. John B. Fery will speak about his grandfather at 6 p.m. Admission is free for Hockaday members and $10 for adults.

Whitewater Festival brings paddlers to Wild Mile

James Michael Collins
James Michael (Mike) Collins, 61, passed away at his home in Evergreen on May 15, 2010. He was born on April 2, 1949, in Spokane, Wash. The family moved to Columbia Falls where he attended school and graduated in 1967. He attended FVCC focusing on forestry. In 1969, Mike joined the Army National Guard, where he attended Officers Candidate School and later became a captain. He was highly recognized for his excellence in leadership, selflessness, and dedication to his unit, and received numerous prestigious commendations. His peers and superiors described Mike as a "diamond among many gems". He retired from the National Guard in 1993 after 34 years of service. During his service with the Guard, he also worked for the Forest Service and the Department of State Lands for several years, after which he went to work for Semitool for many years, until April of 2007.

Cat-Dog Smoker slated
The Glacier Twins will host the annual Cat-Dog Smoker on Monday, June 7 at 7 p.m. at Memorial Park. The boxing event pits high school students from Columbia Falls against those from Whitefish. There are 13 fights scheduled, including at least three between women. Each fight consists of three one-minute rounds.
