Elf magic
Once again it was my privilege to participate in the annual Bigfork Elves D-Day Operation. I was particularly pleased to note the great number of first time participants. I think it's this kind of volunteer activity that continues to speak to the unique character of our village.
Miracles in the news
Since time began, humans all over the world have wanted to believe in miracles. We've all read of such things as the vision of the Virgin in the grotto at Lourdes, France, which attracts thousands of pilgrims. "A miracle is an event or action that apparently contradicts known scientific laws and is hence thought to be due to supernatural causes, esp. to an act of God."
Thanksgiving Day: American as apple pie
Thanksgiving Day is as American as apple pie. Its origin commemorated the harvest reaped by the Plymouth Colony in 1621 after seasons of great starvation. One look at Thanksgiving dinners served today is proof that crops are bountiful.

Thanksgiving past, present and future
I've only been home for one Thanksgiving in the last 9 years, so I've grown accustomed to having a non-traditional celebration with friends, instead of family.

Century-old magazine
I was looking for an old jacket pattern and found a July 1915 National Geographic in the box. Covers are torn off, and masking tape holds the pages together, but black-and-white photos and texts are good.

Of snakes and men
Sure! Now with all the rattlesnakes snuggled in their underground dens for the winter, I find a couple of stories about eem. Actually, rattlers don't snuggle so much as they slither into a great big ball. Some dens may hold only a couple dozen while others may have hundreds. It was one of those really big dens that my father blasted during the winter of 1934-35 on Marco Hill. He was working in a crew rebuilding the road between Camas Prairie and Hot Springs.

Animal cruelty
We admit that we're a bit prejudiced when it comes to cats, but recent events in the Kalispell area should touch the hearts and minds of all residents. A young Evergreen man has admitted to local media and law enforcement that he adopts kittens through "free" ads in local papers and uses the kittens to train his dogs for cougar hunting.

In times past, this column has had fun reporting on the "The Big Apple," New York City, because it is a place so different than our average town in Montana.
